The poet Matthias Johannessen called Seydisfjordur a \u201cpearl enclosed in a shell\u201d and it is indeed one of the most picturesque towns in the country.\r\n\r\nSurrounded by towering mountains and gushing waterfalls, the town is connected to the rest of the country with Fjardarheidi mountain pass, one of Iceland's most scenic routes.\r\nHome to 700 people, the town centre is charming and one of the best preserved in Iceland with colourful wooden houses and a quaint blue church.\r\n\r\nSeydisfjordur has long been the gateway to the Eastfjords. It was first settled by Norwegian fishermen and served as a trading centre in the 19th century.
