We start the tour with driving north to the town of Borgarnes, named after the farm of Egill Skallagrimsson from the sagas. If you’re interested in history, it is possible to take a look at the Settlement Center.
We continue to the sights of West Iceland through the lava landscape of Hallmundarhraun. The lava field was is the result of a giant eruption in the 10th century and is home to the longest lava tubes in Iceland.
It is possible to take a tour inside one of the lava tubes, Vidgelmir.
Our first stop here is the unique Hraunfossar waterfalls. The 900m wide series of rivulets flow out of an ancient lava field into the Hvita river, and are definitely very special!
Barnafoss is featured in the sagas which tell the tragic tale of two children who drowned here.
West Iceland was a setting for many stories from the sagas. The tiny village of Reykholt was the 13th century home of Snorri Sturluson, who wrote some of the most popular sagas and was one of the most influential men in the history of Iceland.
If you’re interested, the exhibition there provides insight into this saga and the quaint hot spring is believed to be one of the oldest used for human bathing in Iceland.
Our last stop is Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. The beautiful farm also
has the Krauma spa where it is possible to stop for a geothermal bath experience.
