More about the Tour

Pickup at the port and a scenic drive

Your day starts right at Akureyri port, where your Italian-speaking guide, easy to spot in a red Saga Travel jacket, will meet you 30 minutes before departure. Settle into a comfortable coach and enjoy a scenic drive through the fjords and mountains of North Iceland on the way to the Myvatn area.

Skutustadagigar pseudocraters (about 25 min)

Your first stop is Skutustadir, with sweeping views over Lake Myvatn. Stroll among the pseudocraters, grassy volcanic cones that formed thousands of years ago when molten lava flowed over wetlands: the trapped water turned to steam and burst through the lava, leaving these unusual craters behind.

Dimmuborgir lava fields (about 50 min)

Next comes Dimmuborgir, the “Dark Fortresses”, a dreamlike maze of lava pillars, rock arches and caves created more than 2,300 years ago. As you wander along the trails, your guide will tell you the local legends of the trolls said to live among these strange formations.

Hverir geothermal area (about 25 min)

Continue to Hverir, at the foot of Mount Namafjall, where the Earth’s inner energy breaks through to the surface. Walk between hissing steam vents and bubbling mud pots in a colourful volcanic landscape, with the unmistakable smell of sulphur in the air.

Godafoss waterfall and refreshment break (about 1 hour)

On the way back to Akureyri, stop at Godafoss, the famous “Waterfall of the Gods”, where the river drops 12 metres into a spectacular gorge. After your visit, warm up at the local cafe with a complimentary coffee or tea and a traditional Icelandic kleina.
