Fljotsdalur Valley

We start the tour by driving north to Egilsstadir. The drive is beautiful with towering mountains, coastal views and charming fishing villages.

Egilsstadir, the capital of the Eastfjords, is set on the banks of the Lake Lagarfljot. Iceland’s third largest lake, it is rumoured to be home to a lake monster, the Lagarfljotsormur (or lake worm).
The road from Seydisfjordur offers some of the best views of the lake and the Fljotsdalur valley.

As we drive around the lake, your guide will tell you more about the region and you can also enjoy folk stories about the monster.
The area surrounding the lake is scenic with the serene Hallormsstadaskogur forest, offbeat waterfalls, the picturesque bay of Atlavik and interesting visitor centres where you can learn more about the area. And if you’re lucky you might see a reindeer!
The stops depend on the interests of the group.

Hallormsstadaskogur is Iceland’s largest forest area. Although mainly birch, the Arboretum boasts of 85 species of trees and is home to a wide variety of bird species. Hiking trails lead down to the Lake and the area is the perfect place for a picnic.

Further along the lake is the Skriduklaustur area. There is plenty to do here – the Cultural Centre housed in a beautiful stone building that was a former monastery, the Snaefellstofa Visitor Centre where you can learn more about the Vatnajokull National Park or a coffee and cake buffet at the Klausturkaffi cafe.

If a waterfall hike is on your bucket list, it might be worth adding an hour to this tour for a hike to Hengifoss. One of Iceland’s highest waterfalls, the layers of black basalt and red clay make a very pretty backdrop and the lesser-known Litlanesfoss on the way is an added bonus.
Another alternative are the geothermal Vok Baths overlooking the Lake Urridavatn.

Time permitting; we can stop at the Holmanes Nature Reserve before we get back to Eskifjordur. A bird watching haven with peculiar rock formations, it offers fantastic views of the fjord and a bit above the road is a huge cairn, believed to be a white witch.
