Akranes

Welcome to Akranes

A 40-minute drive from Reykjavik, Akranes has the best of both – access to all the sights in the capital area and a stepping-stone for discovering the Snaefellsnes peninsula and West Iceland.

The 7000-person town was settled in the 9th century by the Irish and grew in the 17th century as a fishing village. Today it is home to 7000 persons and local industry also includes a cement plant and aluminium smelter.
Football is an important part of the culture and the town boasts of one of Iceland’s best football teams.

The Akrafjall mountain towers over the town. Our guided hike is a great option with spectacular views over the Faxafloi bay and Snaefellsnes peninsula.
Sightseeing to the Golden Circle area and West Iceland are other great options.
