More about the Tour

Just outside Reykjavik, this morning horse riding tour takes you into a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, on the back of the Legendary Icelandic horse. Your ride leads through the small forests of the Holmsheidi hills, along forest trails and past lupin fields, all the way to Raudholar, the Red Hills. These bizarre lava formations are a cluster of pseudocraters formed some 5,200 years ago. Along the way, you enjoy views of the mountains surrounding the capital.

Start with a Riding Lesson

The tour begins at the Viking Horses stable with a short riding lesson. Your guide introduces you to your horse and explains the basics, so even first-time riders feel confident before setting off. The tour suits beginners as well as more experienced riders.

Meet the Icelandic Horse

The Icelandic horse arrived with the first Norse settlers more than a thousand years ago. Since then, no other horse breed has been allowed into the country, which has kept the breed pure for centuries. Small but strong, the Icelandic horse is known for its friendly, calm temperament and its thick coat, perfectly adapted to the island’s climate. It is also one of the few breeds in the world with five gaits, including the famous tolt.

Discover the Tolt, the Icelandic Horse’s Unique Gait

You start the ride at a walk. If everyone in the group feels comfortable, you then get to try the tolt, the special gait of the Icelandic horse. It is a great way to experience what makes this breed so unique. Riders who want a faster pace can book a private tour.

Small Groups and English-Speaking Guides

We ride only in small groups, so every rider gets attention from the English-speaking guides. All the riding gear is provided: saddle, helmet, gloves and rain clothes. You spend 1 to 1.5 hours in the saddle, and photos from the tour are included, so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about your camera.

Coffee, Tea or Hot Chocolate at the Stable

Back at the stable, you warm up with coffee, tea or hot chocolate and cookies. It is the perfect moment to share your impressions before heading back to Reykjavik city centre.
