More about the Tour
The South Coast has a variety of famous sights – stunning waterfalls, black sand beaches, basalt columns and glacier lagoons. The drive is also scenic incredible views of glaciers and volcanoes along the way.
However, please note that this is a long day tour with 10 hours in the bus and only suitable for ships docking in Reykjavik overnight.
We start the tour by driving east along the South Coast to the gorgeous waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss.
Originating from a river in the famous Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano, Seljalandsfoss is unique in that you can walk behind it.
The contrast of the pure white drape-like Skogafoss falls on to the black sands, with the frequent rainbow, is a stunning sight.
Further ahead is the town of Vik, the southernmost village of the mainland. The Reynisfjara beach there is famous for its black volcanic sands, geometric basalt columns and caves, and the towering Reynisdrangar sea stacks jutting out of the ocean.
We continue towards South East Iceland. The landscape here is dominated by Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, and we will drive past the Skaftafell National Park and the glacial tongues surrounding it, the vast alluvial sand plains of Skeidararsandur and the beautiful Lomagnupur, one of Iceland’s favourite mountains.
The long drive is rewarded with the most spectacular glacier lagoon in Iceland. An outlet glacier of the main Vatnajokull ice cap, Jokulsarlon is breathtaking with floating icebergs that have broken off from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier.
The lagoon is also home to curious seals and boisterous skuas.
The icebergs are not static and slowly make their way to the sea. We will also visit the black sand beach across the road, which is often strewn with glittering iceberg pieces and affectionately known as “diamond beach”.
