More about the Tour

Your journey begins at Akureyri Port, where you board the bus for a scenic drive along Eyjafjordur fjord. Enjoy beautiful views of the harbor, dramatic mountain peaks, and the rugged coastline as you travel east towards the remarkable volcanic landscapes of Lake Myvatn, approximately one hour away.

The first stop takes you to Skutustadagigar, a fascinating collection of pseudo-craters created by ancient steam explosions. Surrounded by wetlands, these unusual formations offer a glimpse into the area’s volcanic past. Continue to Dimmuborgir, a striking lava field shaped around 2,300 years ago. Wander among towering rock pillars, natural arches, and hidden caves while discovering the local legends associated with this extraordinary landscape.

Your exploration continues at Grjotagja, a historic lava cave concealing a turquoise geothermal spring beneath the continental rift. From there, travel to Hverir, one of the region’s most distinctive geothermal areas. Here, bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and vivid red and yellow mineral deposits reveal the powerful forces at work beneath Iceland’s surface.

Take a relaxing break at the Myvatn Nature and Heritage Museum, where admission and a light lunch are included. This stop offers an opportunity to recharge and learn more about the area’s natural environment and cultural heritage away from the main sightseeing route.

On the return journey towards Akureyri, visit Godafoss, the spectacular 12-meter-high Waterfall of the Gods. Admire its powerful cascade and capture memorable photographs before stopping at the local cafe at Hotel Godafoss. Enjoy a warm coffee or tea accompanied by a freshly served kleina, a traditional Icelandic pastry.

After a day discovering northern Iceland’s geological wonders and cultural highlights, a short drive brings you back to Akureyri. You can choose to be dropped off in the lively city center or return directly to the cruise port. The excursion includes a guaranteed return to the port at least 30 minutes before your ship’s scheduled departure, allowing you to explore with greater peace of mind.
