Akureyri

The 60km long narrow Eyjafjordur fjord makes for a scenic introduction to the heart of North Iceland.
Akureyri is the second largest town outside of the capital area and the inhabitants hold a reputation for being proud of their history, culture and spirit.

North Iceland is home to some of the most spectacular sights in Iceland – some of its most beautiful waterfalls, the volcanic Lake Myvatn with a plethora of geological wonders, and charming fishing villages along the breathtaking coastline.
Sightseeing tours to the Lake Myvatn area are the most popular shore excursion from Akureyri. There are a variety of options to choose from including the Dettifoss waterfall, the Nature Baths and hiking in the area.

The Troll peninsula to the North West is part of the Arctic Coast Way. With towering mountains, charming fishing villages and remote islands; this region offers more of an off the beaten path experience.

The town of Akureyri itself has several architectural sites, interesting museums and the world’s northernmost botanical gardens. The Laufas turf roofed houses date back to the 9th century and make a great addition to a city tour.

Akureyri is one of the “big four” cruise ship ports in Iceland – the others being Reykjavik, Isafjordur and Seydisfjordur.
