Descripción

The Reykjanes Peninsula sits right on the boundary between two tectonic plates, the North American and the Eurasian. This rare position has shaped a landscape of exceptional volcanic activity, which is why the peninsula has been named a UNESCO Global Geopark, a status reserved for sites of international geological importance.

After pickup in Reykjavik, we drive into an otherworldly landscape of rugged coastline, volcanic craters, quiet lakes and vast lava fields, a perfect introduction to the raw beauty of Iceland.

We first stop at Seltun, one of the country’s most famous geothermal sites. Follow the boardwalks between bubbling hot springs, boiling mud pots and slopes painted in ochre, red and yellow, and feel the heat of the Earth rising beneath your feet.

Our next destination is Fagradalsfjall, the volcano whose recent eruptions have reshaped the area. The lava is no longer flowing, but the freshly cooled fields reveal the full force of these events. A 45-minute hike takes us across this almost lunar terrain to a viewpoint, where your guide will explain the geology of the area and share stories from the eruptions. After some time to take in the view and take photos, we return the same way, for a total of about 2 hours.

The round trip covers about 5.5 km (3.4 miles). The trail is well maintained and easy to follow, but it includes a fairly steep climb of around 300 metres over 2 km. Wind, rain or snow can make the walk more demanding, so a good level of fitness is recommended. Please wear warm, wind- and waterproof layers, sturdy hiking boots and, in winter, ice spikes.

From the volcano, we continue to Grindavik, a fishing town that has shown remarkable resilience in the face of nature. You’ll see how the community has adapted since the recent eruptions, including the dramatic fissure running through part of the town, a striking sign of the tectonic forces at work beneath Iceland. Your guide will explain how these rifts formed and show you the defences built to protect Grindavik, including the earthen barriers that hold back the lava.

Before heading back to Reykjavik, you’ll have time to buy a meal in town. Our tip: try the local fish and chips, made with fish landed in Grindavik, a delicious way to end your day among the volcanoes of Reykjanes.
