The south coast has a variety of famous sights: stunning waterfalls, black-sand beaches, basalt columns and glacier lagoons. The drive is also scenic, offering incredible views of glaciers and volcanoes along the way.
Please note that this is a 13-hour-long tour and only suitable for ships docking in Reykjavik overnight.
We start the tour by driving east along the south coast to the gorgeous waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss.
Originating from a river in the famous Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano, Seljalandsfoss is unique in that you can walk behind it. The contrast of the pure white drape-like Skogafoss falling on to black stones below, frequently casting rainbows, is a stunning sight.
Further along is Reynisfjara beach, famous for its black volcanic sands, geometric basalt columns and caves, and the towering Reynisdrangar sea stacks jutting out of the ocean.
We continue towards Southeast Iceland. The landscape here is dominated by Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, and we will drive past the stunning Skaftafell and the glacial tongues surrounding it, the vast alluvial sand plains of Skeidararsandur, and the beautiful Lomagnupur, one of Iceland’s favourite mountains.
The long drive is rewarded with the most spectacular glacier lagoon in Iceland. Jokulsarlon is breathtaking, with floating icebergs that have broken off from Breidamerkurjokull, an outlet glacier of the main Vatnajokull ice cap. The lagoon is also home to curious seals and boisterous skuas.
The icebergs are not static and slowly make their way to the sea. We will also visit the black-sand beach across the road, which is often strewn with glittering iceberg pieces and affectionately known as “Diamond Beach”.
