Siglufjordur

Welcome to Siglufjordur

Set in a narrow fjord surrounded by towering mountains, Siglufjordur is incredibly beautiful. Colourful houses, art galleries, restaurants and cafes and the award winning Herring Era museum make it a fascinating cruise stop.

Translated as “sailing fjord”, Siglufjordur boasts of one of Iceland’s best harbours and was once known as the herring capital of Iceland. The town had a population of 3000 persons during the herring boom in the 1950s while less than half of that number remains today.

Before the construction of tunnels to the east and west, the town was extremely isolated in the winter. The remoteness, harsh winter and low daylight make a perfect setting for the Dark Iceland series by Ragnar Jonasson, which are an interesting read for crime fiction fans.

Siglufjordur is at the northern tip of the Trollaskagi peninsula and on the Arctic Coast Way.
With the highest mountains outside of the highlands, charming fishing villages and remote islands; this region offers a variety of activity options and makes for a unique off the beaten path experience.
