Your Dettifoss and Godafoss tour from Akureyri starts with a short drive from the landward end of Iceland’s longest fjord, inland, over higher ground, to Godafoss waterfall. Nicknamed “Beauty” (with Dettifoss being the “Beast”), Godafoss is indeed one of the prettiest waterfalls in Iceland. Its name means “waterfall of the gods” as it is believed that idols of the old Pagan gods were thrown into it when Iceland embraced Christianity in 1000 A.D.
We continue east, past Lake Myvatn to the Jokulsargljufur canyon and Dettifoss waterfall, some of the most spectacular sights in all of North Iceland.
At 100 metres wide and 45 metres from top to bottom, with an average water flow of 193 cubic metres per second, you will hear the rumble of Europe’s second-most powerful waterfall long before you see it.
When you do finally see it, you might recognise it from the memorable opening scene from the Oscar-nominated Ridley Scott film Prometheus.
The glacial river canyon stretches for 25 kilometres and is the northernmost part of Vatnajokull National Park.
On the way back, we will stop for photos in the Lake Myvatn area.
Myvatn is Iceland’s fourth-largest lake and is surrounded by diverse natural wonders including the Hverir geothermal area, the Skutustadagigar pseudocraters, and the Dimmuborgir lava formations.
