More about the Tour

Home to the tiny village of Brekkuthorp that has just 40 residents, narrow Mjoifjordur is widely considered to be one of Iceland’s most beautiful and remote fjords. In winter, the winding gravel road closes and the only way to get to the fjord is a ferry from Neskaupstadur making the town one of the most isolated in Iceland.
The view from the steep mountain road is breathtaking.

A series of 9 waterfalls, the Klifbrekkufossar waterfalls and the shipwreck at the bottom of the fjord make for interesting photo stops.
And if you are fit it is possible to hike Prestagil, a deep narrow and very impressive canyon, with many smaller waterfalls and streams.

It is also possible to extend the tour to take the winding gravel road to the Dalatangi lighthouse. Perched high on the cliffs, and the eastern most point of Iceland that you can drive to, Dalatangi offers spectacular views of the surrounding fjords and Atlantic Ocean.

Time permitting; we can stop at the Holmanes Nature Reserve before we get back to Eskifjordur. A bird watching haven with peculiar rock formations, it offers fantastic views of the fjord and a bit above the road is a huge cairn, believed to be a white witch.
