More about the Tour

Ísafjarðardjúp (literally “Ísafjörður’s Deep” in English), is right at the very centre of the unforgettable Westfjords region.
It is 53 km long and is home to three small islands. Additionally, it features eight distinct fjords on its southern shore and several communities, including Ísafjörður and Súðavík, which we visit during the tour.

We begin in Ísafjörður and head out through the beautiful fjords, lined by imposing mountains. Our first main stop is Kambsnes viewpoint, where you can see right across the bay, over the island of Vigur and over to Mongufoss waterfall on Snæfjallaströnd – a peninsula where the snow never completely melts and nobody lives.

Ísafjarðardjúp is among Iceland’s most productive fishing and wildlife grounds, which means it is possible we will catch a glimpse of a whale or two on our way to Hvítanes cape — which is home to a colony of harbour seals. The famous beach is considered one of the best, and most accessible, places to see seals. Whether many of few, near or far, most tours usually see some seals.

There are several ways to customise the tour, depending on personal preference:

A stone’s throw from Hvítanes is the Litlibær turf-roofed farmstead. It was erected in 1895 and lived in until 1969, the tiny dwelling was home to two large families and today hosts an exhibition about life in the past. Oh, and it serves excellent traditional Icelandic coffee and waffles, too!

At the inland tip of Álftafjörður fjord, you might choose to take the relatively easy hike into Valagil gorge to see its spectacular waterfalls.

The village of Súðavík is home to the national research centre and museum dedicated to the iconic Arctic fox, the only native land mammal in Iceland. The centre usually has rescued young foxes on site in a special outdoor enclosure.
