Private Isafjordur Culture Walk

We begin at the cruise dock and head past the fish market, along the quayside to the charming old streets and their original timber buildings. We hear about life in the olden days, trade, the fishing industry, and folklore.

After this we take a peek over beautiful Ísafjörður Bay and get acquainted with the region and the surrounding fjords before carrying on past the music school to the Hæstikaupstaður area where we discuss the settlement of Iceland and the town.

Pressing on, to the library (which was built first as a hospital), to the Jónsgarður park and its whalebone arch, views of the avalanche barriers and the fjord, we then head back to town past the main church.

In the town centre we will hear more about Icelandic cuisine, Iceland’s coffee and cake culture, and local craft. You can also visit the bakery or one of the craft shops to take a look at Icelandic wool and knitwear.

We continue past the grand Edinborg house (Miðkaupstaður) to Neðstikaupstaður, a heritage area with the oldest timber buildings in Iceland and the Westfjords Heritage Museum. Beyond the old houses, you have a gorgeous view of the end of the fjord.

Your guide will walk you back to your ship and will be happy to answer any questions or help you with what you can do for the rest of your time in port.
