Seydisfjordur

Welcome to Seydisfjordur

The 17km long and deep fjord of Seydisfjordur is the perfect way to arrive in Iceland. The poet Matthias Johannessen called Seydisfjordur a “pearl enclosed in a shell” and it is indeed one of the most picturesque towns in the country.

Surrounded by towering mountains and gushing waterfalls, the town is connected to the rest of the country with Fjardarheidi mountain pass, one of Iceland’s most scenic routes.
Home to 700 people, the town centre is charming and one of the best preserved in Iceland with colourful wooden houses and a quaint blue church.

Seydisfjordur has long been the gateway to the Eastfjords. It was first settled by Norwegian fishermen and served as a trading centre in the 19th century. It is the lone Icelandic port of call for the Nordic ferry MS Norrona, which connects Iceland to mainland Europe by sea.
Its excellent natural harbour and short distance from the continent is making it increasingly popular with cruise ships.

Sightseeing tours offer several options for spectacular natural sights, charming fishing villages, hiking and bird watching.

Seydisfjordur is one of the “big four” cruise ship ports in Iceland – the others being Reykjavik, Akureyri and Isafjordur.
